This last week has been a week off for me. I had a lot of work to do, but more than that, I was just plain old tired. I neede the break.
So I didn’t add to my word count but I was writing and editing every day. For those of you who don’t already know, my NaNoWriMo project, Unintended Consequences, is currently in the editing phase. If you want to read the SUPER ROUGH draft, head on over to my Wattpad page and have a read.
But, during this week off I did learn something. I learned that even writers need vacations. I needed time away from my stories. I needed a change of pace, something to write that I hadn’t been hunched over, toiling for hours each day. I needed some fluff and something easy to complete.
The thing about creatives is that we tend to be driven. We are in love with our work and that love, like all love, drives us beyond the normal limits of good sense and propriety. We lose sleep. We forget to eat. We neglect relationships. And then when it’s all said and done the need to eat will force you to “kill your beloved” in the editing/revision phase.
And so, I learned to take a break without feeling guilty. Just like my body, my mind and creativity need food, exercise and rest. I feed it by reading, I exercise it by writing, and sometimes I just need to rest.
