I don’t usually recommend books or reblog book reviews but this one caught my eye and I had to share. Even if you don’t call yourself a feminist, if you believe in the social, economic, and political EQUALITY of women and girls then this books is a great one for all of the little girls in your life.
The Girl Who Said Sorry by Hayoung Yim is a beautifully illustrated 16 page picture book for young readers. Although the book’s audience is of school age the message is profound and resonates with females of all ages. A must read book in schools as it introduces feminist mindset early on.
The tale is about a little girl you tries to live up to the constantly changing standards that girls face, as soon as she changes, the standards are changed once again. The girl is made to feel sorry even though she is only following along with instructions. She can never win. The ending is simple but beautiful.
The book is so accurate in highlighting the double standards that girls are subjected to from a very young age. These ridiculous standards carry on all the way to adulthood.
